The Path of Time

Everyone has heard the expression, “I’m not getting older, I’m getting better”.  Well, when it comes to photography, I usually find that I am drawn to anything old and run down because there is so much more character and texture compared to something brand new.

This photo is a case in point.  About two years ago, my hubby built a screen door for the back door of our house that leads out to our deck and painted it white.  I’m always impressed when he builds something because he just pictures it in his head and builds it – no plans or patterns.  The door was gorgeous and allowed a beautiful breeze to flow through our home on hot days.  Now a couple of years have passed and the harsh winters and the blazing summer sun have taken their toll on my pretty screen door, and the paint is peeling everywhere.

On the one hand this really bothers me because I feel like nothing lasts any more and my door just doesn’t look as nice.  On the other hand, from a photographer’s perspective I think it is great.  A few years ago I would never have thought of taking a picture of my peeling door, but the path of time has changed more than just my door.

Agree! Lovely photo! Old things definitely have more character. I got a few weird looks from people as I photographed a piece of wood laying on a dock the other day. They were probably just wishing someone would throw the danged thing in the water and get it out of the way.

” I usually find that I am drawn to anything old and run down…” Obviously that’s why you like me so much! And your friend who says “Old things definitely have more character,” is perfectly right! I do. 🙂 P.S. I love it that you love to take photos of weird old objects… they tell wonderful stories.

      • Geez, Dor, you almost got me fired today!!! No, I’m just kidding, but when I read your comment I did laugh out loud and everyone looked at me and thought to themselves, “Oh, there’s that crazy Cindy laughing out of the blue for no reason again!!” LOL! And you are not old and run down – you are AWESOME!!! 🙂
